Project Cheer-up!

A week has gone by since I started the project cheer-up.  I've kept my good intentions of winter walks and buying flowers.

I even received some cheer-up smiley chocolates from my lovely colleague! I haven't touched them yet as another cheering prospect is loosing those three kilos.

I feel, that the intention to cheer-up is already helping a bit but I'm not there yet. Is it the stress? Surely being bored at work would be equally distressing.

The other day I read Centsational Girl's post about writing down the things you were grateful for and I think, I'm going to give it a try. It won't hurt anyway.

If nothing helps it might be time for my regular thyroid check-up. Sometimes inexplicable mood swings can be down to an hormonal imbalance. It only takes a blood test to make sure everything's all right.

Look out for my next post, I have wicked plans for the forthcoming weekend!

January blues

The new year is not even a month old and for some reason I can't kick-start it. My time off already seems a long time ago and the months ahead are looming ominously.

I didn't  make resolutions for the New Year because my only plan was to be happy. Easy, ey? But since I started work again I had the sniffles, which keep me from the Gym, at the office I'm exactly at the same point like before christmas and I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

So how to get out of the rut? My only ideas so far are a long winter walk, getting some flowers for the apartment and checking out the events pages. Concerts, exhibitions, the lot. Bring on the weekend! Any ideas are very welcome.

PS: The latest from the Wonky Workshop.

 The denim apron.

The denim pockets.

Holiday reads

Time flies, doesn't it? It seems very fitting that I feel like a time traveller myself when I try to remember when I first clapped eyes on Diana Gabaldons first book of her epic Outlander series. It must have been sometimes during the mid-1990ies, when I used to work as a bookseller.
So 20 (in words: twenty!!!) years later I've just finished the most recent installment "Written in my own heart's blood", the eighth in the bestselling series.

So 1100 pages later I have to applaud Gabaldons skill again, she still manages to captivate me with her stories of eternal love through the times.

Sod e-books for cover pictures - here's two of her earlier ones.

If you haven't read any of the first novels you have to start immediately with the first one: Outlander. "The year is 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon - when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach - an 'outlander' in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord ... 1743." (Copied shamelessly from the blurb of my ancient paperback).

Another christmas read is the second novel by Tanja Frei, Das Whispern der Nacht, is not yet available in English. Every bit as gripping as her first book, I certainly enjoyed reading more about Jenna Winters and her adventures as the Guardian.

Santa Montefiore, Secrets of the Lighthouse

Over the years I have read several of Montefiores sagas and didn't have to think twice about buying her latest one. Situated in Ireland it tells a mystic story about love and death.

Danielle Hawkins, Dinner at Rose's

Always keen to read books set in New Zealand, I loved this charming story about Jo. After finding her fiancee in flagrante with another woman, she returns to her small home town in rural NZ, finds a job as a physiotherapist,  looks after her sick aunt and runs into her former boyfriend...

So, 2015, ey? Ten days into the new year, three days into the new workyear finds me unusually optimistic. Optimistic and grateful. Grateful most of all for my job and my 100-odd close colleagues.
I remember very painfully my situation this time last year: Unemployed, bored and desperate.

This blog kept me going and then after five very long months someone gave me a chance and I landed an excellent job in an international company. The first seven months were exciting, amazing and exhausting. The eight weeks before christmas nearly brought me to my knees but now 15 days later I am well-rested and looking forward to new experiences and adventures.

Adventures like my planned weekend trip to London in June to join the Blogtacular conference .

I'm also looking forward to sharing all my adventures with you here!
Happy New 2015 everyone!
