Lisbon - city of light!

Lisbon is a magical place full of sun and light!

Here are a few tips for your visit:

1. Get a Via Viagem ticket for the Metro, trams and ferries at the airport. It's a bit like an oyster card and you can upload any amount. We put 15 Euros on it and didn't use it all up in 5 days.
It's valid for one year after purchase.  Transport Lisboa

2.  Try the local fish and wine specialities for example at "Babete" restaurant in Calcada do Duque.

3. Visit the Castelo de Sao Jorge. You get marvellous views over the old town and the river. There's a restaurant and a coffeeshop, where you can get sandwiches and drinks for eating in the sun. The countless steps to the castle walls might be too much if you're not steady on your feet though.

4. Take the ferry to Cacilhas to get a different perspective on the Ponte 25 de Abril (or the Golden Gate Bridge as I call it) and the Cristo Rei statue.

5.  Visit the ruins of the Carmo Cathedral also known as the Museo Arqueologico do Carmo.

6. Have drinks in the evenings at your local outside bar.  I loved the Porto Tonic and the Caipirao.

7. Go for a ride on the legendary Tram 28!

8. If you love your custard tart go for a Pastel de Nata or any other of their baked goods!

9. Watch the sunrise or sunset from one of the many miradouros (viewpoints) around town.

10. Try to learn at least the most basic phrases like Bom dia or Boa tarde and most important of all: Obrigado/obrigada for Thank you!

And last but not least: Don't forget to relax!

Sketching continues

More than half of my challenge is already done and I'm having a great time. Inspiration is found everywhere, my apartment, the internet, the newspaper, toys and nature. Not all of them are perfect but most of them make me smile and that's a brilliant result!

 Models are expensive.

From the Guardian's "How to draw..." series ( The woolly mammoth!

And the penguin:

Playmobil has come a long way in 30 years, the surfer girl:

And number two:

And here we go. All ready and prepared for the big Lisbon adventure, starting tomorrow:

Challenge Update

The my 30-sketches-challenge is going well. Sometimes I have to do 2 in one day because I didn't have time on the actual day but so far I'm on track. The difficult thing is to find motives. When I don't, I go back to Jennie's Sketchbookclub and do variations of them.

Or I use the challenge as an excuse to buy myself flowers.

Or my kitchen cupboard channeling Andy Warhol.

Or using some beachcombing finds, pieces of glass.

 Or my spiderplant.

My 30-sketches-in-September-challenge

After re-discovering my love for drawing and trawling through the web for inspiration and ideas I thought I'd hold my very own challenge.
It'll be sketching every day in September, making 30 sketches alltogether in order to make it a habit and loosen that wrist. After all, only practice makes perfekt.
I've also discovered countless artists on the web who assembled the most awesome travel diaries and am dead envious.
I think, the main difficulties will be to stick to it, not to be too self-conscious to draw in public and not to be too critical of my efforts.

Here are my first five sketches:
